The Moon Hall of Fame.
As mentioned in the letter column, I have been corresponding with Alan Moon on the subject of a games Hall of Fame. There are no restrictions, any type of game, published at any time, anywhere. We are however talking absolute top-notch here remember, forget all this business about stars and the like, but of course you assign your own criteria. Alan hasn't told me his, but I can guess. Alan is lucky enough to have a collection of over 1,300 games to choose from and he has come up with the following lists so far. What I am not sure about is whether he intends to push on to 100 or if the 50-odd listed here are the only ones to satisfy the criteria of excellence. So, here goes:
War Games: Family/Sports Games: Blue & Grey Quads SPI Acquire 3M/AH Britannia Gibsons/AH Barbarossa ASS Caesar Alesia AH Careers Parker Civil War Victory Die Macher Hans im Gluck D&D TSR Doolittle & Waite Inward Dune AH 1829 Hartland 1812 Gamma Two Football Strategy AH Flat Top Battleline/AH Greyhounds Hans im gluck Fury in the West Battleline/AH Hols der Geier Ravensburger Fury of Dracula GW Homas Tour Homas Spelen Junta Creative/West End Indiscretion Piatnik Midway AH Karriere Poker Hexagames Napoleon Gamma Two/AH Liars Dice MB Nuclear Destrruction Flying Buffalo Metropolis Ravensburger Origins of WWII AH Monopoly Parker Russian Campaign Jedko/AH Mr President 3M/AH 6th Fleet Series Victory Formel 1 ASS 1776 AH Pictionary Games Gang Stellar Conquest Metagaming/AH Railway Rivals Watts Titan Gorgonstar/AH Schoko & Co Schmidt Viceroys Task Force 6-Tage Rennen Holtmann War at Sea/VITP Jedko/AH Totopoly Waddington World in Flames ADG Wildlife Adventure Ravensburger Win Place & Show 3M/AH
Plus these generic card games: Casino, Cribbage, Hearts, Oh Hell, Pinochle, Poker
Alan also lists several honorable mentions that are rather too long to type.
I am sure I'm not alone in agreeing and disagreeing with a few of those choices, the problem is I simply haven't had the time to compile my own list and that will follow next time, rather appropriately in issue 25. I would, of course, be interested in seeing any comments on the above and also any other reader's list for comparison. I'm sure Alan would be keen to hear any responses too.
